The Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Converters’ Association. The industry trade association for companies who manufacture and sell motor vehicles converted to be used by a wheelchair passenger.
The Aims of WAVCA
- To improve the quality and safety of wheelchair carrying vehicles and to enhance standards of customer care
- To improve technical standards in our industry
- To lobby for meaningful legislation for wheelchair passenger vehicles
- To improve customer awareness of the technical standards issues
Why WAVCA Was Formed
- To represent the needs of the industry for improved standards of design and regulation of wheelchair passenger vehicles
- To represent needs of the wheelchair user travelling as a passenger
- To raise awareness amongst consumers about safety and lack of regulation in our market-place so they could make more informed decisions
- To use our experience to influence legislation rather an have inappropriate regulations imposed on us
- To have a strong voice as part of the Motor Industry
- In 1999 WAVCA produced a ‘Code of Practice’ for converters of wheelchair accessible vehicles. This is now the basis of the Motability WAV standard
What Does WAVCA Do?
- Leads on quality standards in our industry, encouraging improved technical and customer service standards in the market-place
- Represents best practice to the consumer
- Protects its members and their clients from risk of poor practice
- Responds to the concerns and needs of our members and to represents them across many sectors of the mobility, healthcare and automotive industry
- This includes major influencers like DfT, VCA, VOSA, SMMT, BHTA, the motor manufacturers, wheelchair manufacturers, key user groups and Motability
- Provides a platform for discussion of key issues and influences policy in relation to our industry and is currently lobbying UK and European government for equal standards for wheelchair passenger vehicles
