Our AimsWAVCA aims to encourage and promote the interests of the WAV industry in the UK and abroad and continue to improve the technical standards in our industry.
We achieve this by working closely with our customers, colleagues in the automotive industry, the Department for Transport and other government agencies. These include major influencers like DfT, VCA, DVSA, SMMT, BHTA, the main motor manufacturers, wheelchair manufacturers, key user groups and Motability. Customer care and the quality & safety of wheelchair passenger carrying vehicles are of prime importance to us and we aim to promote best practice and customer service standards in the marketplace. HistoryThe WAV industry began in the UK in the 1960s and the UK WAV industry has developed over 50 years to become the most sophisticated and customer-driven in Europe. WAVCA has played an important part in this progress.
1989 1st WAVs on the Motability scheme 1993 1st WAVs on the Motability Contract Hire Scheme 1999 WAVCA Code of Practice published 2005 UK industry threatened by European legislation which would reduce numbers allowed under UK National Low Volume Type Approval from 500 to 75 of any Type. 2007/8 WAVCA lobbies European Commission with the result that European legislation is amended to include WAVs as Special Purpose Vehicles alongside Ambulances. 2009/11 WAVCA works with BSi to develop a new Standard for WAVs and offer a new-style accreditation system for Motability and other consumers. 2012 European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) legislation becomes mandatory for WAVs. PAS 2012:2012 Parts 1 &2 published. Motability adopts PAS 2012:12 as their Accreditation Scheme for WAVs. 2013 WAVCA becomes a Limited Company with a Board of Directors WAVCA continues to work with European Commission in the development of legislation for WAVs. WAVCA develops a European trade association for WAVs - Organisation Européenne des Constructeurs de Véhicules Accessibles. 2015 PAS 2012-2015 Part 1 and 2 published. |
Organisation WAVCA is a Company Limited by Guarantee and is run by a Board of Directors voted for annually by the membership at the Annual General Meeting.
